Pamela Hayden, the talented voice actor behind Milhouse Van Houten, the awkward and uncool best friend of Bart Simpson, is stepping away from The Simpsons after an incredible 35-year run.

Hayden, who also brought to life a variety of characters including Jimbo Jones, Rod Flanders, Janey, and Malibu Stacy, will make her final appearance on the show in the Treehouse of Horror episode set to air on November 24.

Reflecting on her decades-long tenure, the 70-year-old shared, “It’s been an honour and a joy to have worked on such a funny, witty, and groundbreaking show.” Her departure marks the end of an era for fans of the iconic animated series.

Series creator Matt Groening paid tribute to Hayden’s contribution, highlighting the distinct charm and humor she brought to the role of Milhouse. “Pamela gave us tons of laughs with Milhouse, the hapless kid with the biggest nose in Springfield,” Groening said. “She made Milhouse hilarious and real, and we will miss her.

The character of Milhouse, often defined by his misfortunes and clumsy innocence, became a beloved figure among fans, thanks largely to Hayden’s comedic timing and heartfelt portrayal.

Milhouse made his debut in a 1989 Butterfinger commercial before becoming a regular on the show. The character’s name, Milhouse, was chosen by Groening as a nod to former U.S. President Richard Milhous Nixon, humorously labeling it as “the most unfortunate name a kid could have.”

Over the years, Milhouse evolved into a lovable but perpetually unlucky sidekick, often serving as the punchline to many jokes and enduring relentless bullying from characters like Nelson Muntz.

One particularly memorable episode saw Milhouse unwittingly land on the America’s Most Wanted list after Bart orchestrated a prank that spiraled out of control. Moments like these underscored Milhouse’s status as Springfield’s most pitiable yet endearing resident.

As Hayden bids farewell to her iconic role, her legacy as the voice behind one of the series’ most relatable and hapless characters will undoubtedly be remembered fondly by generations of fans.
