In 2024, Nigerians turned to Google more than ever to search for the lyrics of their favorite songs, with Ogechi by Brown Joel, Boy Pee, and Hyce taking the top spot.

According to Google’s year-end report, the song captivated listeners across the country, prompting them to look up its lyrics to sing along.

“It’s incredible to see how much love Ogechi has received,” Brown Joel said in an interview. “We poured our hearts into the song, and the response has been overwhelming.” The track’s widespread appeal underscores its impact as one of the defining songs of the year.

Released in May 2024, Ogechi initially gained traction in Eastern Nigeria before blowing up on TikTok. The platform played a pivotal role in its meteoric rise, as users embraced the song’s catchy rhythm and relatable lyrics, turning it into a viral sensation. “We never imagined the song would go this far,” Boy Pee admitted.

“It started as something local, but TikTok gave it wings to reach people across the world.” This social media-driven momentum eventually catapulted Ogechi into mainstream success, making it one of the most talked-about tracks of the year.

While Ogechi claimed the top spot, another standout was Ozeba, a track from Rema’s sophomore album, HEIS. Coming in as the second most searched song lyrics of 2024, Ozeba captivated fans with its up-tempo beat and vibrant street vibes.

“I wanted to create a song that speaks to the hustle and energy of our streets,” Rema shared during a media roundtable. Listeners couldn’t get enough of the track’s infectious rhythm and breathless delivery, making it a fan favorite and cementing Rema’s reputation as one of Afrobeats’ brightest stars.

Other songs that dominated lyric searches in 2024 include Chandler Moore’s gospel hit Omemma, Kizz Daniel’s infectious Marhaba, and Ayra Starr’s bold anthem Comma. These tracks reflect the diversity of Nigeria’s music scene, spanning gospel, Afrobeats, and pop.

Interestingly, the late American rapper Xxxtentacion was the only non-Nigerian artist to make the top 10, demonstrating the enduring global influence of his music. In addition, the new national anthem garnered significant searches, showing how music can resonate deeply with cultural and national identity.

The prominence of Ogechi and other Nigerian songs in the year’s search trends highlights the evolving landscape of music in Nigeria, where digital platforms continue to amplify local sounds to a global audience. As Hyce summed up in a celebratory post:

“This year has been a blessing for Nigerian music. Ogechi was just the start. We’re going to keep creating songs that touch hearts and inspire minds.” The year-end search rankings are a testament to the power of music to connect people, spark conversations, and create unforgettable moments.
