At this year’s Golden Globe Awards, Emilia Perez and The Brutalist emerged as the top film winners, while Shogun and Baby Reindeer dominated the television categories.

Emilia Perez, a vibrant operatic musical about a Mexican drug lord’s journey through gender transformation, won three major awards: Best Comedy or Musical, Best Non-English Language Film, and Best Song.

Zoe Saldana secured Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film. The highlight of the evening was trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon, who accepted the award for Best Comedy or Musical, delivering an emotional speech: “The light always wins over darkness. You can maybe put us in jail. You can beat us up. But you never can take away our soul or existence or identity… I am who I am. Not who you want.”

The postwar drama The Brutalist also made its mark, winning Best Drama. Adrien Brody earned Best Actor for his portrayal of a Hungarian architect striving to rebuild his life in the United States after World War II, while Brady Corbet took home the award for Best Director.

Other notable acting winners included Demi Moore (The Substance), Sebastian Stan (A Different Man), Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here), and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain). Moore, visibly moved, shared how this award was the first in her 45-year career.

“Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a popcorn actress,” she recounted. “I felt like I’d never be acknowledged. But when I read The Substance, it felt like the universe telling me, ‘You’re not done.’”

Despite its popularity, Wicked, the much-anticipated Wizard of Oz prequel, missed out on acting awards for stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande but clinched the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Prize.

Director Jon M. Chu used his acceptance speech to reflect on the power of art in a challenging world: “In a time where pessimism and cynicism rule the planet, making art that is a radical act of optimism and joy means so much to us.”

In television, Japanese historical drama Shogun was the big winner, collecting four awards, including Best Drama and acting accolades for Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Tadanobu Asano. Baby Reindeer also enjoyed a triumphant night, taking home Best Limited Series and a supporting actress award for Jessica Gunning.

The dark comedy, which tells the story of a comedian stalked by an older woman, has recently faced legal challenges. Accepting the award, creator Richard Gadd reflected, “I think people crave stories that speak to the painful inconsistencies of being human. Baby Reindeer proves that dark and complex narratives can resonate deeply.”

However, Gadd lost the acting award in his category to Colin Farrell, who won for his role as Penguin in The Penguin. Farrell, known for his humor, quipped during his speech, “No one to thank—I did it all by myself!” His transformative performance, enhanced by heavy prosthetics, brought depth to the iconic Batman villain as he vied for control of Gotham’s underworld.

The ceremony, held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, was hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, who infused humor into the evening with sharp observations. She joked about Hollywood’s latest obsession with Ozempic for weight loss, calling the event “Ozempic’s biggest night,” and poked fun at Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal troubles and Kamala Harris’ election struggles.

Heightened security measures were in place following recent high-profile incidents, with a strong police presence securing the venue and its surroundings. Despite the tension, the Golden Globes celebrated the best in film and television, showcasing a wide array of talent and stories.
