The New York African Film Festival (NYAFF) is set to showcase three Nollywood films, including “Over the Bridge,” as part of its lineup of 50 films from over 25 countries. Running from May 8 to May 14, the festival celebrates African and diaspora cinema, providing a platform for diverse voices and stories.
Founded in 1993, NYAFF has become a prominent event in the film calendar, highlighting the rich cultural tapestry of Africa and its diaspora.
This year’s theme, “Convergence of Time,” explores the intersection of historical and contemporary narratives within African and diaspora art.
The festival’s opening night on May 8 featured “Over the Bridge,” directed by Tolu Ajayi, followed by a Q&A session with the director on May 9. The film follows the journey of Folarin Marinho, portrayed by Ozzy Agu, an investment banker grappling with alcoholism and panic attacks.

“Over the Bridge” received 12 nominations at the AMVCA, making it the most nominated film, across various categories including Best Director and Best Lead Actress.
In addition, Kenneth Gyang’s “This Is Lagos” and Uche Aguh’s “Dynamite” will also be screened, each offering unique narratives and perspectives within the Nollywood landscape.
“This Is Lagos” explores the story of Stevo, played by Gabriel Afolayan, a rapper confronting the repercussions of his criminal past. Meanwhile, “Dynamite” delves into the complexities of marriage and romance within the music industry.
The festival will conclude on May 14 with the screening of “Dilli Dark,” a Bollywood film featuring Nollywood actor Michael Okeke, followed by a Q&A session with the director, Dibakar Das Roy.
In addition to film screenings, the festival will feature a workshop led by veteran director Ngozi Onwurah, focusing on using film to examine socioeconomic dynamics.
NYAFF continues to serve as a vital platform for cultural exchange and storytelling, bridging the gap between past and present, while highlighting the resilience and creativity of African and diaspora filmmakers.
