The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) has announced the introduction of a new category at the Bafta film awards, dedicated to children’s and family films.

This category recognizes films that have a broad appeal across different age groups, from children to adults. To be eligible, films must have a certificate rating of U, PG, or 12A, indicating their suitability for young audiences.

The new category is the first to be introduced by Bafta in five years and will be awarded for the first time in 2025. Films can be nominated in multiple categories, allowing for a wider recognition of excellence in filmmaking. For example, animated films like Inside Out 2, which has become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, can be nominated for both best animation and best children’s film.

The introduction of this category acknowledges the importance of family-friendly films in the industry. Other potential contenders in this category include highly anticipated releases like Paddington in Peru and Despicable Me 4.

Bafta’s decision to create this category also aligns with their plans to introduce similar family-focused awards in their TV awards in the near future. In addition to the new category, Bafta has made other changes to the awards ceremony, including updates to the rules for film nominations.

Previously, films needed to be screened at least 10 times per day for a seven-day period to be eligible for the best film category. Now, films must be exhibited on at least 50 commercial screens in the UK for at least seven days, equivalent to at least 350 screenings.

A new points-based system has also been introduced for the best British film category to provide clearer guidance on film qualifications. The 78th edition of the Bafta film awards will take place on February 16, 2025, and will recognize excellence in filmmaking across various categories, including the new children’s and family film category.

This addition highlights Bafta’s commitment to celebrating films that appeal to diverse audiences and promote inter-generational connections.
