Barry Keoghan, the acclaimed Irish actor known for roles in films like Saltburn and The Banshees Of Inisherin, has joined the cast of the upcoming Peaky Blinders film, as announced by Netflix. He will star alongside Cillian Murphy, the original series’ lead, who will reprise his role as Tommy Shelby.
This news follows the earlier announcement that actress Rebecca Ferguson, known for her work in Dune and Mission Impossible, will also be part of the cast. While details of Keoghan’s role have not been disclosed, his inclusion adds further anticipation to the project.
The Peaky Blinders series, created by Steven Knight, gained widespread acclaim for its portrayal of the Shelby family, a notorious gang in post-World War I Birmingham. Running for six seasons from 2013 to 2022, the show became a cultural phenomenon.
The film adaptation was first announced in June, with Cillian Murphy not only returning as the lead but also co-producing the project. Murphy has expressed that the film is a special gift for the fans, and production is scheduled to start in Birmingham in September.
The film is expected to be an intense and “explosive chapter” in the Shelby family saga, taking the story into the Second World War under the direction of Tom Harper, who directed the first season.
Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of Tommy Shelby has significantly boosted his career, building on his earlier roles in major films such as The Dark Knight series, Inception, and 28 Days Later.
Most recently, he garnered widespread acclaim for his role as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s biopic Oppenheimer, sweeping major awards including an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Screen Actors Guild award.
Barry Keoghan, who has earned recognition in his own right, won the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor in 2023 for his role in The Banshees Of Inisherin and received an Oscar nomination in the same category.
He was also nominated for Best Actor at this year’s BAFTAs for his performance in Saltburn. Outside of his acting career, Keoghan is reportedly dating singer Sabrina Carpenter, who has gained popularity with recent hits like Espresso and Please Please Please from her sixth album, Short n’ Sweet, released last week.
