John Barrowman’s participation in the reality show Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins came to an abrupt end after just 32 minutes during the opening episode.

The Doctor Who star quit the Channel 4 show after a challenging first task, which was based on SAS winter warfare training in the South Islands of New Zealand. Barrowman could be seen vomiting after the initial challenge and shortly after, he informed his fellow contestants, “I’m out.”

When approached by ex-SAS Sergeant Major Mark “Billy” Billingham, Barrowman declined medical assistance, stating that the experience was not for him. His swift exit marked the earliest departure in the show’s history, with the narrator confirming, “After only 32 minutes on base, number 13 John is the first recruit to leave the course.”

Barrowman, 57, who is also known for his roles in West End musicals, explained his decision to leave by emphasizing his self-awareness and comfort in recognizing his limits.

This brief stint on the show follows a series of controversies surrounding Barrowman, who was previously accused of inappropriate behavior during the production of Doctor Who and its spin-off, Torchwood.

He has since dismissed these allegations as “bawdy behavior” and “silly behavior.” His departure from the show leaves the remaining 14 celebrities to compete in the rigorous quasi-military training series, which last year was won by singer Gareth Gates.

The current line-up features a diverse group of celebrities, including Rachel Johnson, the sister of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, reality TV star Pete Wicks, former Olympic gymnast Ellie Downie, and comedian Tez Ilyas.

Other notable participants include professional basketball player and Love Island star Ovie Soko, and world heavyweight champion boxer Lani Daniels.

Each contestant faces a series of grueling tasks designed to test their physical and mental endurance under the harsh conditions modeled after SAS training. The challenges are expected to push them to their limits as they strive to prove their resilience and determination.

Reality TV star Bianca Gascoigne, former England rugby captain Chris Robshaw, and TV presenter Cherry Healey also make up the celebrity cohort.

They are joined by former professional boxer Anthony Ogogo, comedian Shazia Mirza, Love Island contestant Georgia Harrison, reality star Bobby Norris, and former Geordie Shore star Marnie Simpson.

The show promises an intense competition where each participant must confront their fears and endure the demanding environment. For many, it is a chance to showcase their grit and determination, as well as to redefine public perceptions.

The first episode also delved into the personal struggles of Bobby Norris, best known from The Only Way Is Essex. Norris opened up about his past battles with online abuse and the impact it had on his self-image.

He recounted using Botox as a coping mechanism, describing it as a mask to hide his insecurities. Eventually, he decided to embrace his natural self, emphasizing his desire to be comfortable in his own skin.

His journey on the show is not just about overcoming physical challenges but also about personal growth and confronting the emotional scars left by social media bullying.
