Adidas and Kanye West have formally ended their dispute over his antisemitic remarks in 2022, which had led to the termination of their “Yeezy” collaboration. The comments West made resulted in Adidas halting the Yeezy collection, but on Tuesday, the company announced that a settlement had been reached, officially closing all legal issues between them.
Adidas CEO Bjorn Gulden confirmed in a call that there are no financial obligations remaining for either party, as both sides agreed to move forward without further conflict.
Gulden elaborated that while there were initial tensions over the split, both Adidas and West decided the “drama belongs to the past.” In business conflicts of this nature, Gulden noted, resolutions often involve provisions, legal evaluations, and settlements, which has been the case here, allowing both parties to conclude their partnership without lingering issues.
Adidas still holds a significant stockpile of Yeezy products, estimated to be worth €1.2bn (£840m). The brand has chosen to sell these items in batches, with proceeds going to various NGOs, including its own anti-discrimination foundation.
Adidas expects to sell the remaining Yeezy stock by the end of 2024, ensuring that profits support charitable causes, marking a strategic yet socially conscious approach to moving forward after the partnership.
The decision to end the dispute with West contrasts sharply with Adidas’s stance in 2022, when the company cut ties due to West’s “unacceptable” comments, which it described as violating core values of diversity, inclusion, and respect.
Adidas took a firm stand against antisemitism and hate speech, publicly condemning West’s statements, which had also led to suspensions of his social media accounts on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter).
The Yeezy collaboration, which began in 2014, had been a lucrative venture, generating high demand and propelling the brand’s success. Even after Adidas severed ties, Yeezy products continued to attract buyers on the resale market, with trainers often selling for substantial amounts, highlighting the enduring appeal of the Yeezy brand despite the controversy.
West’s controversial statements in 2022 continued across various platforms. He made repeated antisemitic remarks in interviews, some of which were never broadcasted.
The situation escalated in December, when he appeared on conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ show InfoWars, where he shockingly expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler. This fueled further backlash and criticism from the public and media.
In light of these events, Adidas’s decision to officially end the dispute with West signifies a pragmatic approach to winding down the partnership.
As West has openly discussed his bipolar diagnosis and struggles with mental health, the conclusion of legal proceedings with Adidas may allow him to focus on his personal well-being, while Adidas can fully transition away from the controversy, aligning with its values and responsibilities.
