A groundbreaking new podcast, Virtually Parkinson, will feature AI-generated interviews hosted by an AI replica of the legendary Sir Michael Parkinson, marking a world-first. Produced by Deep Fusion Films, this eight-episode series leverages AI to synthetically recreate Parkinson’s distinct voice and interviewing style, drawing on his vast archive of over 2,000 interviews.
With his family’s support, this podcast aims to capture his conversational magic, reintroducing his skillful approach to a fresh generation of listeners. Virtually Parkinson promises unscripted celebrity interviews, blending cutting-edge AI technology with the warmth and nostalgia of Parkinson’s legacy.
Parkinson’s son, Mike Parkinson, proposed the idea to Deep Fusion Films, viewing it as a heartfelt tribute to his father, who passed away last year at 88. Mike expressed his desire for audiences to appreciate the innovation and nostalgia the podcast offers, as well as his father’s remarkable interviewing talent.
Through this medium, Mike hopes to keep his father’s memory alive and inspire admiration from new fans who may not have experienced his charm firsthand. As the project took shape, Parkinson’s family and estate were deeply involved, ensuring it honored his legacy authentically.
To bring this unique concept to life, Deep Fusion Films expanded its team, bringing in a new head of creative AI, an AI prompt engineer, and other key roles. Their advanced AI system, called “Squark,” enables live interactions using voices from the past, producing realistic and responsive AI interviews.
Co-founder Jamie Anderson noted the emotional impact on Parkinson’s son upon hearing the AI’s recreation of his father’s voice, describing it as a moving experience. Listeners who previewed the AI replication found it impressively accurate and warm, underscoring the technology’s potential to deliver an engaging auditory experience.
Virtually Parkinson not only honors Sir Michael’s career but also raises essential questions about AI ethics, particularly within entertainment. As AI technology advances, its impact on the industry is met with both excitement and concern, underscored by last year’s Hollywood strikes led by actors and writers alarmed by AI’s potential impact on their work. In the UK, Equity launched the “Stop AI Stealing The Show” campaign to address fears around job security and the misuse of performers’ likenesses.
Deep Fusion Films is addressing these concerns by being transparent, stating at the outset of each episode that the host is AI-generated and providing listeners with a post-interview debrief to discuss the experience with the interviewees.
While Virtually Parkinson introduces AI into a revered genre, Deep Fusion Films is careful to honor Parkinson’s original style while openly showcasing the AI element. The podcast will conclude each episode with the interviewee’s reflections on being interviewed by AI, offering insight into this unique experience.
Although the lineup of guests is yet to be announced, the show promises to include prominent figures from diverse backgrounds, including entertainment, music, and politics, potentially allowing AI-Parkinson to engage in memorable dialogues reminiscent of his iconic past interviews.
Sir Michael Parkinson’s illustrious broadcasting career spanned six decades and saw him conduct over 2,000 interviews on major networks like the BBC, ITV, and Sky. Known for his respectful yet probing style, Parkinson interviewed countless celebrities, including John Wayne, Fred Astaire, Madonna, and the Beckhams.
His candid and, at times, tense exchange with Hollywood star Meg Ryan remains one of his most talked-about moments. This new podcast will not only introduce his legacy to younger audiences but also celebrate his contributions to television and journalism.
Scheduled for release on the official Michael Parkinson YouTube channel, Virtually Parkinson will coincide with a curated collection of archival clips, further immersing audiences in his legacy. By blending classic footage with innovative technology, the podcast captures the essence of Parkinson’s style and offers listeners a one-of-a-kind experience.
With Virtually Parkinson, Deep Fusion Films bridges nostalgia with technological innovation, potentially setting a precedent for how AI might reshape the future of legacy broadcasting.
