A group of around 200 artists, including Billie Eilish, Jon Bon Jovi, and Sheryl Crow, have signed an open letter penned by the Artist Rights Alliance, urging AI developers, technology companies, and digital music services to refrain from using AI in ways that infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.
The alliance acknowledges AI’s potential to enhance creativity but emphasizes responsible usage. Their concerns center around privacy invasion, unauthorized use of artists’ identities, and the utilization of music to train AI models.
They argue that some companies are using artists’ work without permission to train AI models, aiming to replace human-created content with AI-generated material, which could significantly reduce artists’ royalties.

The alliance calls for a pledge from developers and platforms to refrain from developing or deploying AI tools or content that undermine human artistry or deny fair compensation to artists.
This letter reflects a broader industry pushback against the use of generative AI that infringes upon copyright and workers’ rights. In March, Tennessee passed legislation to protect musicians from having their voices replicated by AI for commercial purposes, set to take effect in July.
