Asake’s third studio album, Lungu Boy, has been officially crowned the biggest album of 2024, according to the annual end-of-the-year chart released by TurnTable.
The album, which dropped on August 8, 2024, surpassed all others in terms of both streams and sales, accumulating an impressive 214.4 million streams (143,000 units).
Asake’s Lungu Boy marks a significant milestone in his career, reflecting his growing influence in the global music scene. This achievement solidifies him as a dominant force in Afrobeats, with the album’s success extending far beyond his home country of Nigeria.
The album features an array of high-profile collaborations, further demonstrating Asake’s intention to broaden his appeal to a global audience. Notable guest appearances on Lungu Boy include Nigerian Grammy-winner Wizkid, British rap stars Stormzy and Central Cee, and Brazilian artist Ludmilla.
These international partnerships serve as a testament to Asake’s ability to seamlessly blend local and global sounds. Each of these collaborations contributed to the album’s widespread acclaim, helping it achieve higher streaming numbers than any other album in 2024. The reception from global audiences highlights the increasing reach of Afrobeats, as Asake continues to attract attention on major streaming platforms.
Following closely behind Lungu Boy in second place is Seyi Vibez’s EP, NAHAMciaga, which earned 174.9 million streams (116,600 units). This success was fueled largely by the popularity of the EP’s hit singles, including “Different Patterns,” which became the most streamed song of 2024 on Apple Music Nigeria.
Additionally, the track “Cana” also made its mark, securing a spot in the top 5 of the year. Seyi Vibez’s ability to craft deeply resonant tracks that speak to a broad audience has firmly established him as one of the leading voices in the current Nigerian music scene, with NAHAMciaga solidifying his place among the year’s best-performing projects.
Young Jonn’s debut album, Jiggy Forever, took third place with a total of 162.2 million streams (108,000 units). Known for his infectious production and signature sound, Young Jonn’s album featured an array of hits that resonated with fans across Africa and beyond. Tracks like “Aquafina,” “Bahamas,” “Stronger,” and the popular collaboration “Big Big Things” with Kizz Daniel and Seyi Vibez, helped propel the album to widespread success.
Jiggy Forever underscores Young Jonn’s ability to craft songs that both move listeners and make a lasting impact, placing him firmly in the upper echelons of Nigerian music.
The fourth position on the chart was claimed by Rema’s ambitious sophomore album, HEIS, which racked up 153.8 million streams (102,533 units). Rema, a Grammy nominee, took a bold approach with this album, infusing it with energetic, uptempo beats and introspective, chest-thumping lyrics. His aim was clear: to reclaim the Afrobeats dance floor from the growing influence of Amapiano.
Rema’s distinct voice and powerful presence on tracks from HEIS exemplified his versatility and ambition, making it one of the most anticipated albums of the year. Finally, Asake’s sophomore album Work of Art released in 2023, also made its mark, ranking fifth with 148 million streams (98,666 units).
The album’s success is indicative of Asake’s ongoing dominance in the mainstream, with hit singles like “Lonely At The Top” and “Remember” continuing to captivate audiences.
In addition to these top five albums, several other notable Nigerian artists made appearances in the top 20 of TurnTable’s list. Ayra Starr’s sophomore album, The Year I Turned 21, earned 93.5 million streams (62,333 units), showcasing her rapid rise in the industry. Davido’s record-breaking fourth studio album, Timeless, released in 2023, rounded out the top 20 with 69.1 million streams (46,066 units).
Despite its release in the previous year, Timeless remained a significant force in 2024, underlining the enduring popularity of Davido and his impact on both the Nigerian and global music scenes. These rankings underscore the diverse and dynamic nature of the Nigerian music industry, with artists continuing to push boundaries and achieve major milestones.
