Afrobeats superstar Davido has recently revealed that his hit song ‘With You,’ featuring Omah Lay, drew inspiration from veteran Nigerian highlife legend Bright Chimezie.

In a heartfelt interaction shared on social media, Davido FaceTimed with the music icon, expressing his admiration and gratitude.

“The latest hit I just did with Omah Lay, I used inspiration from your song, ‘Because of English,’” Davido told Chimezie, his voice filled with excitement. Bright Chimezie, visibly surprised and pleased, responded, “Yeah?” Davido’s face lit up as he confirmed, “Yes o, I will tell them to play it for you. It’s trending everywhere, the whole world.”

The exchange captured the bridge between two generations of Nigerian music.

During the video call, Davido also conveyed his desire to meet Chimezie in person and properly express his appreciation. “I’m still around for a bit, so I was telling them maybe we will get you to come to Lagos so we will meet. It would be nice,” Davido proposed.

Chimezie, smiling warmly, responded, “Okay, that would be wonderful, that would be nice.”

For Davido, the opportunity to connect with one of his musical inspirations was a dream come true, while for Chimezie, it was a moment of pride to see his legacy influencing a new wave of Nigerian music.

Bright Chimezie, often referred to as the ‘Zigima Sound King,’ has left an indelible mark on the Nigerian music industry with his unique style that blends traditional highlife with social commentary and humor.

His Zigima Movement, which he introduced in 1984 with the album ‘Respect Africa,’ quickly gained popularity for its lively beats and thoughtful lyrics.

Over the years, Chimezie has released eight studio albums, including his sophomore album ‘Life of Yesterday’ in 1987, which featured popular tracks like ‘No True Love,’ ‘Nne m Oma,’ and ‘Message Boy.’

His ability to merge cultural storytelling with infectious rhythms has made him a beloved figure in Nigerian music.

For Davido, whose career has been defined by global hits and groundbreaking collaborations, the revelation of Bright Chimezie’s influence on his latest project highlights the enduring power of Nigerian music heritage.

Davido’s fifth studio album, ‘5ive,’ has been a commercial success, with ‘With You’ becoming one of its standout tracks.

The singer’s willingness to acknowledge his influences publicly demonstrates his deep respect for the veterans who paved the way.

“I’ve always listened to greats like you,” Davido told Chimezie. “Your music has a way of telling stories that stay with people.”

As the two stars discussed a possible in-person meeting, fans were thrilled by the connection between them, celebrating the recognition of a legend by a modern-day Afrobeats giant.

Davido’s tribute to Chimezie is a reminder that the roots of Afrobeats are deeply embedded in the sounds and stories of highlife and other traditional genres.

With ‘With You,’ Davido has not only delivered another hit but has also paid homage to a musical icon whose artistry continues to inspire new generations.
