Australian animated series “Bluey” is set to transition from the small screen to the big one, with a feature film scheduled to premiere in 2027.

This beloved programme, which follows the adventures of the lovable blue heeler puppy Bluey and her family—mum Chilli, dad Bandit, and younger sister Bingo—will be produced by Disney and BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the media giant.

Joe Brumm, the creator of the award-winning show, will take the helm as director and writer for the film, ensuring that the same charm and warmth that have made “Bluey” a worldwide sensation are captured on the big screen. Notable voice actors from the series, including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack, will reprise their roles as the Heeler parents.

“Bluey” has achieved immense popularity across the globe, with the series reaching audiences in over 140 countries. It was the most-watched show on Disney+ in 2024, solidifying its place as a beloved household name.

In the UK, the show ranked as the top program on CBeebies back in April, demonstrating its widespread appeal. Earlier this year, the series premiered its first extended-length special, “The Sign,” which garnered an impressive 10.4 million views within just seven days, as reported by The Walt Disney Company.

Creator Joe Brumm has always envisioned “Bluey” as more than just a television show and felt it deserved a theatrical adaptation. He believes the upcoming film will offer an engaging, family-friendly experience, one that everyone can enjoy together.

Brumm’s experience with a longer format on “The Sign” during the show’s third season further fueled his desire to push the boundaries, creating a feature film that extends the series’ imaginative universe. He plans to take a hiatus from the television series to concentrate fully on the movie, aiming to provide audiences with a richer and more cinematic experience.

Dana Walden, co-chair of Disney Entertainment, expressed her excitement about the upcoming film, stating, “Since its debut on Disney Jr and Disney+, Bluey has become a global phenomenon, uniting families with its heartfelt stories of play, imagination, and connection.”

She added, “We are proud to expand our partnership with BBC Studios, bringing the magic of Bluey to life on the big screen. We are deeply grateful to Joe Brumm for creating a world that continues to inspire and delight families everywhere.”

Tom Fussell, CEO of BBC Studios, echoed the enthusiasm, noting, “We are thrilled to take Bluey to cinemas, especially given the series’ unprecedented success on a global level.” He believes that the film adaptation will allow the show to reach an even wider audience and showcase its enduring appeal.

Following its theatrical release, the movie will be available for streaming on Disney+, ensuring that fans around the world can continue to enjoy Bluey’s adventures from the comfort of their homes. It will then be available on ABC iview and ABC Kids in Australia, providing the local audience with an opportunity to experience Bluey’s magic on both screens big and small.
