Nigerian music and entertainment company Dapper Music has officially responded to the allegations leveled against it by rapper Shallipopi, who recently announced his departure from the label.

Shallipopi, whose real name is Crown Uzama, accused the company of breach of trust and a lack of financial transparency. These allegations sparked widespread reactions in the entertainment industry, prompting Dapper Music to issue a detailed statement denying the claims.

The controversy began on December 11, 2024, when Shallipopi shared a press release on his Instagram page explaining his decision to terminate his contract with Dapper Music.

In his statement, he alleged that the label had breached his trust by compelling him to sign a publishing deal with Dvpper Digital, a subsidiary of Dapper Music founded by Damilola Akinwunnmi, popularly known as Dapper.

Shallipopi further claimed that the label failed to provide him with comprehensive financial details and had him agree to relinquish 30% of his earnings indefinitely.

In its response, Dapper Music categorically denied all the allegations, describing them as “shocking and unfounded.” The label maintained that all its contracts are presented with transparency, clarity, and legal representation to protect the interests of its artists.

“Every contract is prepared with the utmost professionalism, and artists are afforded full legal representation to ensure their rights are safeguarded,” the statement read. Dapper Music also emphasized its commitment to upholding ethical practices in its dealings with talents.

Addressing the claims of financial opacity, Dapper Music revealed that it had cooperated fully with Shallipopi and his auditors to provide detailed financial statements. The label noted that a meeting was held as recently as December 9, 2024, to address his financial concerns.

Regarding the accusation of signing away 30% of his earnings in perpetuity, the company clarified that this was a misrepresentation. According to Dapper Music, Shallipopi willingly agreed to a 30% management fee, a standard rate in the global music industry.

Dapper Music also condemned what it described as a “premeditated and false attack” on the label, suggesting that the allegations were orchestrated by individuals envious of its success. The company expressed its willingness to seek legal redress if necessary, reiterating its commitment to transparency and fairness.

“Dapper Music has always operated with sincerity and is prepared to defend its reputation in a court of competent jurisdiction,” the statement concluded. As the dispute continues to unfold, it highlights the growing tensions between artists and labels in the Nigerian music industry.
