Afrobeats sensation Davido made a surprise appearance at Times Square in New York to show his support for Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya, who is striving to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon.
Onakoya kicked off his attempt to surpass the record on Wednesday, aiming for a staggering 58-hour marathon. Davido, fresh from selling out Madison Square Garden, joined the event to offer encouragement to his fellow Nigerian.
Videos circulating on social media captured the heartwarming moment as Davido embraced the jubilant chess master, their camaraderie evident as they danced together.
Onakoya’s marathon is set to conclude on April 19th, and he has already enjoyed success in all his matches, including a showdown with New York’s National Chess Master, Shawn Martinez.
Prior to Davido’s appearance, fellow Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold had also visited the venue to lend his support to Onakoya and make donations towards the live streaming of the event.
The outpouring of support from both the music and chess communities underscores the unity and pride felt by Nigerians in celebrating their talents on the global stage.
