Veteran South African actor Dr. John Kani has been awarded the esteemed Order of the British Empire (OBE) by King Charles III, recognizing his exceptional contributions to drama both in South Africa and internationally.

Kani’s illustrious career began in the 1960s, during the era of apartheid in South Africa. In 1975, he, along with fellow performer Winston Ntshona, won a Tony Award for their performance in Athol Fugard’s play “Sizwe Banzi is Dead” in New York.
His recent works include voicing Rafiki in the 2019 remake of “The Lion King” and portraying T’Chaka in Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” (2016) and “Black Panther” (2018).
