Mike Jeffries, the former CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch, has been declared unfit to stand trial on sex trafficking charges due to severe health issues, according to both his defence attorneys and prosecutors.
The 80-year-old business mogul is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, and the lingering effects of a traumatic brain injury, according to a letter filed by his lawyers in federal court in Central Islip, New York.
His defence team explained that Jeffries requires round-the-clock care, citing evaluations by medical professionals as evidence of his deteriorating condition.
Prosecutors and Jeffries’ defence attorneys have reached a consensus, recommending that he be placed in the custody of the federal Bureau of Prisons for up to four months.

Smith and Jacobson have also pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.

These professionals concluded that Jeffries’ cognitive issues are both progressive and incurable. According to the experts, Jeffries’ cognitive decline is severe enough to impair his ability to understand the charges against him.
The defence team highlighted that his deteriorating mental state would not allow him to regain competency, and therefore, he should not be tried in his current condition.
Dr. Alexander Bardey, a forensic psychiatrist, and Dr. Cheryl Paradis, a forensic psychologist, both evaluated Jeffries and concluded that his condition is irreversible.
They stated, “The progressive nature of his neurocognitive disorder ensures continued decline over time, further diminishing his already limited functional capacity.”
In their professional opinion, they determined that Jeffries is not competent to proceed with the case and that he cannot be restored to competency in the future, based on his current mental state.
