The inaugural Northern Music Awards, held in Manchester, showcased talent from across the north of England, with winners including Louis Tomlinson, The Courteeners, and Aitch. Louis Tomlinson was named artist of the year, The Courteeners won band of the year, and Aitch received the music moment of the year award for his Glastonbury 2023 performance.
The event aimed to celebrate the unique musical contributions of northern England, with musicians like Melanie C and Lisa Stansfield also receiving recognition.
The awards were organized by Nordoff and Robbins, a music therapy charity, aiming to establish a prestigious event akin to the Brit Awards for the north.
Reflecting on the significance of the event, The Courteeners frontman Liam Fray highlighted the importance of celebrating northern talent and the sense of community within the region’s music scene.
Among the recipients, Mancunian rapper Aitch and veteran Manchester DJ Paulette were recognized for their contributions, alongside music icons like Melanie C and Lisa Stansfield.
The event also honored rising stars like English Teacher and The K’s, showcasing the diversity and vibrancy of the northern music scene.
Despite the celebration, there was acknowledgment of the challenges faced by northern artists, with discussions around stereotypes and regional representation.
The hope is that the Northern Music Awards will continue to grow, showcasing the best talent from different cities each year and raising funds for Nordoff and Robbins to support their music therapy initiatives, including the establishment of a dedicated center in Salford.
