Former BBC TV presenter Beccy Barr, who transitioned to a career as a firefighter, has died at 46. Barr worked for BBC North West Tonight from 2013 until 2019 before joining Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service. She was diagnosed with incurable abdominal cancer in 2023.
Her sister announced her peaceful passing on Barr’s X account. Colleagues remembered her as a “feisty, fearless woman” and praised her courage, both in battling her illness and in leaving a successful TV career to make a difference as a firefighter.
Barr followed in her father’s footsteps when she joined the fire service and was a member of the Red Watch in Blackburn. She also pursued an MSc at Bournemouth University’s Disaster Management Centre.
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service expressed deep sadness at her passing, lauding her as a dedicated and inspirational firefighter. Chief Fire Officer Justin Johnston highlighted her professionalism, passion, and significant impact during her five years of service.
Tributes poured in from various quarters, including Lancaster and Wyre MP Cat Smith, who praised Barr’s enthusiasm and positive influence. BBC North West editor Chris Brindley remembered her as a much-loved team member and a talented journalist. Barr began her journalism career at the Blackpool Citizen and worked for Bloomberg News and CNBC in New York before joining the BBC in Lancashire.
Barr was also an active Girlguiding leader, most recently running a Rainbow unit at St Paul’s Church in Scotforth, and participated in triathlons, including IronmanUK. She is survived by her daughter, Hannah.
