Bob Bryar, the former drummer of the iconic American rock band My Chemical Romance (MCR), has passed away at the age of 44 at his home in Tennessee, according to US media reports.
Known for his powerful drumming and lasting contributions to the band’s success, Bryar served as MCR’s longest-tenured drummer, holding the position from 2004 to 2010.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Bryar pursued his passion for music by studying sound engineering at the University of Florida. He initially worked as a sound engineer for touring bands, a role that eventually brought him into contact with MCR in 2004.
After forming a close friendship with the members, he was invited to join as their drummer, marking the beginning of a transformative chapter for both Bryar and the band. In 2006, he suffered third-degree burns during the filming of a music video, which led to severe infections and prolonged medical complications. Unfortunately, his health issues persisted, with recurring wrist problems ultimately affecting his ability to perform. By 2010, the band announced Bryar’s departure, calling it a “painful decision.” Despite his exit, he left an indelible mark, including songwriting credits on their fourth studio album.
After leaving MCR, Bryar gradually stepped away from the music scene, officially retiring in 2021. In his later years, he auctioned off some of his cherished band memorabilia to support various animal charities, reflecting his love for animals and commitment to philanthropy.
Speaking to ABC Audio at the time, he explained, “I have too many wrist issues… it’s time for something new.” This marked the end of his remarkable musical career, but his contributions to the world of rock continue to inspire countless fans and musicians.
MCR disbanded in 2013, only to reunite six years later, much to the delight of their devoted fanbase. The band is set to embark on a highly anticipated US stadium tour in 2025, a testament to their enduring popularity and legacy.
