Former Miss Nigeria, Mrs. Edna Ibru, has passed away in London following a brief illness.
The sad news was shared by her son, Dr. Paul Aidido Ibru, in a statement released on Saturday, January 18, 2025. He described his late mother as an extraordinary woman whose sudden departure has left the family heartbroken.
“Our amazing mother passed into glory on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness,” he wrote. “Until her death, she was full of life, and we never expected her to leave us so soon, but we cannot question the will of God in her precious life.”
Dr. Ibru highlighted the unique qualities of Mrs. Edna Ibru, emphasizing her warmth and vibrant personality.
“She was a lover of people, a mediator, a mother to many, outrageously humorous, deeply caring, and down to earth. She was always full of stories, and we will miss her very dearly,” he added.
The family also announced that her burial arrangements would be communicated at a later date, as they take time to mourn the remarkable woman they have lost.
Mrs. Ibru, née Park, held a distinguished place in Nigerian history, not just as the first Miss Nigeria to compete at the Miss Universe pageant in 1964, but also as a prominent figure in Delta State’s political and social landscape.
She was married to Olorogun Felix Ibru, the first executive governor of Delta State, and together they had two children, Paul and Sheri Felix Ibru.
Her role as a former First Lady of Delta State added another layer to her influence and legacy, as she championed social causes and supported her husband’s leadership.
Beyond her public life, Mrs. Ibru’s personal reflections revealed her deep appreciation for life. In a 2016 interview with ThisDay newspaper, she was asked about her thoughts on life after death.
She responded with profound candor, saying, “I am not quite sure, but I know I am going somewhere, and I know I will come back (on the day of resurrection). But when I die, what I want is good music.”
Her love for music and celebration encapsulated her vibrant spirit and her zest for life.
When asked in the same interview if she would live her life differently in another world, Mrs. Ibru gave an equally heartfelt reply.
“I will live my life the same way and even add more because I love life. What are we living for? We die once. So I have no regrets,” she said.
This response captured her philosophy of embracing life fully and with no regrets, a testament to her inspiring outlook and joyful approach to living.
As family, friends, and admirers mourn her passing, Mrs. Edna Ibru is remembered for her contributions to Nigerian society, her groundbreaking role as Miss Nigeria, and her enduring legacy as a loving mother, wife, and community leader.
Her humor, kindness, and love for storytelling will be deeply missed by all who knew her. The nation celebrates a life well-lived, even as it grieves the loss of a true icon.
