The Africa Film Academy has officially revealed the nominees for the 2024 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), during a press briefing held at the Sheraton Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos. The event, themed ‘Celebrating African Creativity,’ marks the 20th edition of the prestigious awards, and it is poised to be a significant celebration of the continent’s finest in filmmaking.

Leading the nominations is Uche Okocha’s Nigerian film ‘The Weekend’, which earned an impressive 16 nominations. Close behind is Femi Adebayo’s ‘Jagun Jagun,’ which secured seven nominations. The awards ceremony, highly anticipated across the African film industry, is scheduled to take place on November 2 in Lagos, in partnership with the Lagos State government.

The Africa Movie Academy Awards, popularly referred to as AMAA or the AMA Awards, have long been a symbol of excellence in African cinema. Founded by Peace Anyiam-Osigwe and managed by the Africa Film Academy, AMAA recognizes exceptional talent and contributions from professionals across the African film industry.

The awards also extend their recognition to non-African professionals who have contributed significantly to African cinema. Beyond celebrating the achievements of filmmakers, actors, and producers, AMAA plays a crucial role in fostering unity across the African continent by promoting arts and culture as a shared heritage.

Over the years, AMAA has gained a reputation as one of the most prominent film events in Africa, often compared to the Oscars for its significance within the industry. By providing a platform for African filmmakers to showcase their talents on a global stage, the awards have become instrumental in shaping the narrative of African storytelling and advancing the continent’s film industry.

The 2024 edition promises to uphold this tradition, spotlighting the creativity, innovation, and hard work that drive African cinema.
