George RR Martin, the author of “Game of Thrones,” will be attending the Worldcon sci-fi convention in Glasgow next month but won’t be part of the official event lineup due to not completing the application process.
Despite contacting the event’s programming chair earlier this year and suggesting various proposals, including a memorial panel for the late writer Howard Waldrop, Martin did not submit an application through the formal process.
In a blog post, Martin expressed his uncertainty about his participation in the convention’s events, stating that he received no responses after his initial attempts to contact the organizers.
He plans to attend the convention as a guest, visiting the art show, dealer’s room, and possibly socializing at the bar with friends and fans.
Worldcon, taking place from August 8-12 at the Scottish Event Campus, is the largest celebration of science fiction writing, run entirely by volunteers.
The organizers have expressed their excitement about Martin’s attendance and hope there will be other opportunities for him to interact with fans despite missing the official program submission window.
A spokesperson emphasized the fairness of their application process, which received around 2,000 proposals from members, leading to nearly 1,000 participants and over 1,000 hours of programming.
