Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has honored renowned gospel musician Asu Ekiye with the title of Ijaw Language Ambassador, recognizing his dedication to preserving the language through his music.
The announcement was made in Yenagoa during Ekiye’s musical concert and album launch, tagged the ‘Ebikamo Experience.’ Governor Diri emphasized that this appointment aligns with his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the Ijaw language does not fade into extinction.
Speaking at the event, Governor Diri praised Ekiye’s unwavering passion for upholding the linguistic heritage of the Ijaw people through his art. He highlighted the efforts of his administration in training Ijaw language teachers and reaffirmed the government’s intention to further promote the language.
“Asu Ekiye has shown a deep commitment to keeping our language alive through his music. This is something we must all support,” the governor stated.
The governor also used the opportunity to commend the peaceful nature of the Ijaw people, emphasizing that Bayelsa State remains a stable environment due to their inherent values of peace and unity.
He called on the people to continue supporting his administration’s development agenda, assuring them that more projects aimed at fostering growth across the state were in the pipeline. “My dear people of Bayelsa, our state is peaceful because the Ijaw people are peaceful. Let us support the state government and the federal government,” Diri said.
In his speech, the governor reflected on the divine timing of the evening’s events. “I would have been here earlier, but I was told the venue was not ready. When it started raining, I instructed my Chief of Staff and SA on Religion to represent me. But immediately after I made that decision, the rain stopped,” he recounted.
Addressing Ekiye, he continued, “On behalf of our government of Assured Prosperity, I want to say a big thank you to you and your team. They say a prophet is not recognized in his hometown, but here you are celebrated. When you are blessed by God, nobody can take it away from you. ‘Haa Izon!’ is a call for unity, not for war.”
Asu Ekiye, known for his vibrant performances, captivated the audience with his songs and energetic dance steps, drawing the governor himself onto the dance floor. The electrifying atmosphere underscored the joy and pride that Ekiye’s music brings to the Ijaw people.
With his new appointment as the Ijaw Language Ambassador, Ekiye’s contributions to cultural preservation have been officially recognized, further cementing his legacy as a key figure in the promotion of the Ijaw heritage.
Governor Diri concluded by encouraging all parents to teach their children the Ijaw language and work collectively with the government to ensure it thrives for generations to come.
