Doug Ingle, the lead vocalist and organist of the iconic heavy rock band Iron Butterfly, passed away at the age of 78. He co-founded the band in 1966 and was known for their epic 17-minute long track “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” which gained widespread recognition, even appearing in a 1995 episode of The Simpsons.
Ingle’s son announced his father’s death on social media but did not disclose the cause.”In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” featured on the band’s 1968 album of the same name, achieved immense success, spending 81 weeks in the US top 10 charts and earning quadruple-platinum certification.
The track, known for its length, became a staple in rock circles, often used by disc jockeys for breaks.
The song’s title derived from a misheard phrase, “in the Garden of Eden,” by the band’s drummer, adding to its mystique.
Over the years, it was covered by various artists, including Slayer and Boney M, and featured in films like Michael Mann’s “Manhunter.”
Ingle’s passing marks the end of an era, as he was the last surviving member of Iron Butterfly’s original lineup, following the deaths of other founding members.
Despite numerous lineup changes over the years, the band continued to tour, with the current members joining after 1995. Ingle’s son expressed gratitude for his father’s role as a mentor and friend, highlighting the cherished memories he leaves behind.
