The ceremony, held on Monday at the iconic Hollywood Boulevard, was a moment of celebration and reflection for the Emmy-winning actor, whose illustrious career spans acting, producing, directing, and writing.

Among the notable attendees were filmmaker Tyler Perry and producer Shonda Rhimes, who delivered moving tributes to Washington, praising her talent, dedication, and trailblazing achievements in the television industry.

Best known for her role as Olivia Pope in the groundbreaking ABC drama Scandal, Washington described the honor as “surreal.” She attributed the milestone to her father, Earl Washington, whose unwavering belief in her helped bring the dream to life.

“Anytime he would hear that somebody was getting one, he was like, ‘Why don’t you have one?’” she revealed in an interview with Variety. “I feel like he’s manifested this moment. I’m excited that I get to share it with him.” Her heartfelt acknowledgment highlighted the role her family played in shaping her journey.

During the ceremony, Washington delivered an emotional speech reflecting on her upbringing and the powerful influences of her parents. She spoke of her mother’s family roots on Simpson Street in the Bronx, which inspired the name of her production company.

“My mom and dad also taught me to dream,” she said, addressing her parents directly. “Mom, Dad, can you believe it? An actual star. You made a wish, and it came true.” The tribute to her parents underscored Washington’s deep gratitude for their support and guidance throughout her life.

Washington’s career is marked by numerous accolades, including Emmy and SAG nominations. Her role in Scandal made history as she became the first Black woman in 40 years to lead a network drama, earning her critical acclaim and elevating her to a position of influence in the entertainment industry.

Beyond acting, Washington has made her mark as a producer, director, and author. Her memoir, Thicker Than Water, showcases her storytelling prowess and offers a glimpse into her personal and professional experiences.

In a touching moment during her speech, Washington extended her gratitude to her supporters. “May you always know that this star, this Kerry Washington star, this is our star. It is your star, as much as it is mine. Thank you for being on this cosmic journey with me,” she said.

Her words resonated with fans and collaborators alike, emphasizing the collective effort and shared victories that have defined her career. The ceremony not only celebrated her achievements but also her ability to inspire others through her work and her story.

Washington’s journey is far from over, as she continues to push boundaries in her craft. She is currently working on Tyler Perry’s upcoming film The Six Triple Eight, set for release in cinemas on December 6 and on Netflix on December 20.

The drama, inspired by the all-Black, all-female battalion that served during World War II, showcases her commitment to telling important stories. This new chapter in her career promises to further cement her legacy as an artist dedicated to excellence, representation, and innovation.
