Kim Kardashian has reportedly visited Lyle and Erik Menendez, two brothers serving life sentences for the murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in Beverly Hills 35 years ago.
The Menendez brothers, who were 21 and 18 at the time of the crime, shot their parents multiple times at close range in August 1989.
Their case has resurfaced in popular culture due to the Netflix drama Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, currently topping Netflix’s viewing charts.
Kardashian visited the brothers at the Richard J Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego County, where she spoke about prison reform.
The brothers, who are active in a rehabilitation project called Greenspace, were among the inmates listening to her.
Kardashian was accompanied by her sister Khloé, her mother Kris, and Cooper Koch, the actor who plays Erik Menendez in the Netflix series.
Recently, the real Erik Menendez criticized the Netflix show, calling it dishonest and accusing it of portraying his brother Lyle in a false and damaging light.
In a statement shared by Erik’s wife Tammi, he condemned the series for spreading “blatant lies” and accused its creator, Ryan Murphy, of acting with “bad intent.”
Erik further argued that the show undermined the cause of male sexual assault victims, a reference to the brothers’ claim that they killed their parents after enduring years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
The prosecution during the trial, however, contended that the Menendez brothers murdered their parents to claim a large inheritance.
This conflicting narrative has become a focal point of the Netflix series, which attempts to explore both sides of the story.
In response to Erik’s criticism, Ryan Murphy stated that Erik had not watched the series and defended the portrayal by explaining the obligation to tell the parents’ side as well, based on research.
Murphy acknowledged the difficulty of seeing one’s life depicted on screen, but emphasized the importance of showing multiple perspectives in storytelling.
He argued that the show was not only about the Menendez brothers but also about their parents, whose viewpoints were necessary to present a balanced narrative.
Cooper Koch, the actor portraying Erik, revealed that he undertook extensive research to prepare for the role.
He watched the entire Menendez trial and even fell asleep to the trial recordings, immersing himself in the details of the case.
His portrayal of Erik aims to capture the complexities of the brothers’ defense and the psychological dynamics at play during their trial.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, starring Javier Bardem, Chloë Sevigny, Cooper Koch, and Nicholas Alexander Chavez, is currently streaming on Netflix.
The show delves into the infamous case and presents its own interpretation of the events that led to the Menendez brothers’ conviction, sparking renewed discussion about their crime and its aftermath.
