‘Lakatabu’ Tops Nollywood Charts as Hollywood Films Dominate Box Office for the Month of June

Between June 21 and June 27, 2024, “Lakatabu” was the highest-grossing Nollywood film, according to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN).
Directed and produced by actor Odunlade Adekola, the primarily Yoruba language film earned nearly ₦65 million, making it the second-highest-grossing movie overall.
The film’s total box office gross stands at ₦64.8 million.”Lakatabu” follows the story of an armed robber, played by Adekola, who uses magical support to terrorize, kidnap, and murder.
The plot intensifies when he starts receiving threats from rivals, exploring the challenges he faces and the fear he evokes.
The highest-grossing film during this period was the Hollywood action comedy “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” starring Martin Lawrence and Will Smith, with ₦62.2 million.
Throughout June, Hollywood films dominated the Nigerian box office, highlighting the preference of Nigerian cinema-goers for Hollywood content over Nollywood.
The last time a Nollywood movie topped the list was in May, with Bolanle Austen-Peters’ “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” grossing nearly ₦47 million.
Other Nollywood films that made the recent list include Biodun Stephen’s “Muri and Ko,” Dolapo Adigun’s “Criminal,” and Ayeny T. Steve’s “Offshoot,” which grossed ₦22.3 million, ₦4.1 million, and ₦2.7 million respectively.
