BBC presenter Lauren Laverne has announced that she is undergoing treatment for cancer, sharing the news with her followers on Instagram. The 46-year-old, known for her work on Radio 4’s “Desert Island Discs” and as a DJ on various BBC channels, revealed that her cancer was unexpectedly detected early during a routine screening, and she is expected to make a full recovery.

Laverne expressed deep gratitude to her medical team for their skill and care, as well as to her family, friends, and colleagues for their unwavering support during this challenging time.

In her heartfelt post from the hospital, Laverne encouraged others to stay on top of their health by keeping up with medical appointments and screenings. She emphasized the importance of early detection in cancer treatment, urging her 250,000 followers to not delay in seeking medical advice if needed.

She acknowledged that many people will face a cancer diagnosis at some point in their lives and stressed that finding out as early as possible can make a significant difference in outcomes.

Her post:

Right then, some personal news… I recently had a cancer diagnosis. It was (thank God) caught early and unexpectedly during a screening test and I am expected to make a full recovery. I’m in hospital at the moment and wanted to take this moment to say thank you: Firstly to the medical teams who have got me this far with incredible skill and kindness. To my family and friends who have been absolutely extraordinary every step of the way – I am so very grateful and love you so much. And of course thank you to my colleagues – including those at @itg_ltd, @bbc6music, @bbctheoneshow and #DesertIslandDiscs for their support – and for giving me the time off that I need to get better.

I also want to say that if you’re avoiding a test or putting off an appointment to get yourself checked out please, please do it today. Half of us will get cancer at some point, and if you do, finding out asap is everything. It’s usually my job to bring the good vibes on air but any you have to spare are very much welcome here. Sending loads of love to anyone in a similar boat, or who has made it back to shore. xxx

Laverne, who has been a prominent figure in British media for years, did not disclose the specific type of cancer she is battling. She took the opportunity to thank her colleagues for allowing her the necessary time off to focus on her recovery.

Known for her upbeat presence on air, Laverne asked her fans to send positive vibes her way as she navigates this difficult period, also extending her love and support to others who might be facing similar health challenges.

Beyond her radio and TV career, Lauren Laverne first gained public attention as the lead singer of the 1990s pop-punk band Kenickie. Since then, she has become one of the BBC’s highest-paid presenters, taking over the iconic “Desert Island Discs” in 2018 from Kirsty Young.

Laverne is also a familiar face in the broadcaster’s coverage of major events like the Glastonbury festival and has hosted prestigious ceremonies, including the Ivor Novello Awards earlier this year.

The news of her illness has prompted an outpouring of support from fans and fellow celebrities, including actor Richard E Grant, actress Vicky McClure, and singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who wished her a speedy recovery.

Laverne’s candid post has resonated with many, highlighting her bravery in sharing her journey and her commitment to raising awareness about the importance of early cancer detection.
