Nigerian comedian and activist Mr Macaroni has taken a bold stance against former senator Ben Murray-Bruce, calling him out for what he termed as “hypocrisy” over his recent support for Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The controversy began after Murray-Bruce posted on X (formerly Twitter), showering Akpabio with praise and vouching for his integrity. According to the former senator, Akpabio is a man of “unimpeachable good character” who has been “investigated in and out” but has remained “clean as a whistle.”

His statement stirred reactions, especially given his past criticism of Akpabio, which many, including Mr Macaroni, found contradictory.

In his post, Murray-Bruce argued that Nigeria is at a delicate point in its history and needs stability rather than political conflicts. “Nigeria needs stability and men of ability, and it behoves us as a nation to tread with caution at this critical time of our national life,” he wrote.

He emphasized that institutions like the Legislature must be protected from unnecessary attacks. “I will not stand idly by while some persons try, both home and abroad, to destroy an institution I was once proudly a part of,” he added.

Expressing unwavering support for Akpabio, he declared, “I give him my right hand of fellowship and stand firmly with him. Innuendo, hearsay, and dog whistles will always come. But they can never be so powerful that they will take preeminence over facts.”

However, Mr Macaroni was quick to expose what he saw as a contradiction in Murray-Bruce’s stance by digging up an old tweet from 2018. In the resurfaced post, the former senator had harshly criticized Akpabio, accusing him of attempting to subvert national laws and even suggesting that his visa should be revoked.

The comedian shared screenshots of the old tweet alongside a scathing caption. “Nigerian politicians only care for themselves alone! It’s never about the people!! Only about their pockets. Your hypocrisy is smelling sir!” he wrote.

This instantly sparked conversations among netizens, with many agreeing that political figures often change their positions based on personal interests rather than principles.

Further reinforcing his argument, Mr Macaroni shared yet another post from 2018 in which Murray-Bruce had once again spoken against Akpabio. The resurfaced tweet showed the former senator taking a strong stand against Akpabio’s actions, a stark contrast to his recent praise.

Mockingly, Mr Macaroni captioned the post, “Mr Common Sense 🙌🏾🙌🏾,” referencing the nickname Murray-Bruce had earned for often advocating for logic and fairness in governance.

The irony of the situation was not lost on social media users, who flooded the comment section with reactions, many of them expressing disappointment in how politicians frequently shift loyalties.

Mr Macaroni, who has been an unwavering advocate for accountability and good governance, used the opportunity to highlight how politicians often flip-flop on issues to serve their agendas.

His response has once again positioned him as a voice of the people, unafraid to call out double standards in leadership. As the debate continues to unfold, many Nigerians are left questioning the sincerity of political figures and their ever-changing allegiances.
