Renowned Nigerian activist and actor, Mr Macaroni, has openly criticized Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, over his response to the recent hardship faced by Lagosians following the abrupt closure of the Independence Bridge.

Taking to his platform on X, the comedian did not hold back as he called out the government’s approach to handling public distress, making it clear that addressing the struggles of citizens is not an act of charity but a fundamental responsibility of those in power.

In his words, “The Governor is not doing anyone a favour by addressing the hardship Lagosians are facing. It is his responsibility!!!” His frustration stemmed from what he described as a widespread culture of accepting subpar governance, one that has conditioned the people to tolerate suffering while politicians evade accountability.

“Most people have been conditioned to accept the barest minimum from politicians, and that is why there is zero accountability to the people,” he asserted, urging citizens to demand more from their leaders.

Expanding on his argument, Mr Macaroni pointed out the significant privileges government officials enjoy, all funded by taxpayers’ money. He argued that those in power live far removed from the struggles of the ordinary citizen, shielded from the daily frustrations that Lagosians endure.

Directly addressing Governor Sanwo-Olu, he said, “Sir @jidesanwoolu, the people pay for your nice convoy, your security, your accommodation, and every other luxury your office affords you.”

His statement resonated with many, as it highlighted the stark contrast between the everyday struggles of the average Lagosian and the comfort of those in political office. The activist emphasized that these benefits should come with an unwavering commitment to public service, not indifference.

Mr Macaroni went on to argue that such privileges should serve as a reminder for those in power to lead with empathy and dedication, rather than detachment. He lamented that while Lagosians were forced to endure agonizing traffic gridlocks, long hours of waiting, and unpredictable commuting conditions, government officials remained insulated from such struggles.

“All of these and many more make things very easy and enjoyable for you, such that you never have to deal with the pain and hardship the people suffer,” he continued. “The least you can do is to serve them with utmost respect and total commitment! They don’t deserve anything less!!!”

His impassioned plea struck a nerve with many who felt that politicians often failed to recognize the extent of suffering their decisions could cause.

The closure of the Independence Bridge on April 2, 2025, had thrown Lagos into chaos, triggering massive gridlock that left countless commuters stranded for hours. Many people struggled to get to work, school, and other obligations, while commercial drivers increased fares due to the prolonged delays.

Public frustration mounted as social media became flooded with complaints, videos, and images of the traffic nightmare. In response, Governor Sanwo-Olu eventually addressed the situation, acknowledging the distress it had caused.

However, his statement only fueled more discussions about the government’s approach to infrastructure management and public services, with many questioning why proactive measures had not been taken to prevent such a crisis in the first place.

By the following day, the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, intervened, leading to the reopening of the bridge. However, the episode left a bitter taste in the mouths of many Lagosians, who saw it as yet another example of reactive governance rather than strategic planning.

Mr Macaroni’s outburst reflected a broader sentiment shared by many Nigerians—one of frustration over leaders who only act when public outrage reaches a boiling point.

His call for accountability was not just directed at the governor but at the entire political class, emphasizing that true leadership is about service, not self-indulgence.

As Lagosians continue to grapple with everyday challenges, his words serve as a stark reminder that those in power must be held to higher standards, with no room for complacency.
