Nigerian singer Naira Marley has responded to the news of his exoneration in the case related to the death of his former signee, Mohbad, in September 2023.

The controversy surrounding Mohbad’s passing had placed Marley at the center of a storm, with accusations and speculations clouding his reputation. However, on February 25, 2025, a new legal directive from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) in Lagos cleared him and others of any involvement.

This ruling, delivered at The Magistrate Court in Sabo, Yaba, Lagos State, was read and officially implemented by Magistrate Ejiro Kubenje, marking a significant turn in the ongoing legal battle.

In addition to Naira Marley, the court also acquitted music promoter Samson Balogun, widely known as Sam Larry, as well as Owodunni Ibrahim, called Primeboy, and Mohbad’s former manager, Opere Babatunde.

These individuals had all been subjects of public scrutiny, with many believing they played a role in the unfortunate events leading to Mohbad’s death. However, the legal advice presented in court found no sufficient evidence linking them to any wrongdoing. A representative from the legal team confirmed that all charges against them had been dropped, effectively putting an end to the allegations.

Following the announcement, Naira Marley took to social media to express his emotions regarding the ruling. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), he shared a verse from the Holy Quran: “And whoever puts all his trust in Allah, He will be enough for him. (65:3).”

The post, which reflected his reliance on faith throughout the ordeal, resonated with his supporters and signaled his relief at being legally vindicated. Additionally, he posted another message on his Instagram story, quoting another verse:

“And remember, O Prophet, when the disbelievers conspired to capture, kill, or exile you. They planned, but Allah also planned. And Allah is the best of planners.” This statement hinted at his belief that justice had ultimately prevailed despite the hardships he had faced.

Beyond his personal reflections, Naira Marley also acknowledged the support of those who stood by him throughout the ordeal. He reposted a fan’s message that highlighted the struggles he had endured since being linked to Mohbad’s death. The post painted a picture of his resilience, stating:

“Could any of us carry the weight Naira bore? The world turned its back, his name dragged through the mud, yet he walked into the storm—head high, heart steady—returning home to face the justice system alone. No safety net, no outstretched hands, only the echo of judgment.” The message resonated with many of his followers, some of whom had remained loyal to him despite the backlash.

The accusations against Naira Marley had significantly impacted his career and public image. Following Mohbad’s tragic passing in 2023, he was widely condemned across social media, with users calling for his cancellation.

The allegations led to a severe reputational crisis, causing him to lose brand endorsements and partnerships. Many distanced themselves from him, fearing association with a case that had drawn intense public scrutiny. His social media pages also reflected this decline, with over 50,000 followers unfollowing him in the wake of the controversy.

Despite the legal victory, the damage to his reputation may take time to repair. Public perception remains divided, with some acknowledging the court’s ruling while others continue to question the events surrounding Mohbad’s death.

However, Naira Marley appears determined to rebuild his career and restore his name. His recent posts suggest that he sees this moment as a turning point, a chance to move forward from the darkest period of his life. Whether the industry and the public fully welcome him back remains uncertain, but for now, he holds on to the belief that truth has finally prevailed.

As he looks ahead, Naira Marley’s focus will likely be on re-establishing himself within the Nigerian music scene. With the legal chapter closed, he may attempt to reconnect with his audience and regain lost ground in an industry where perception is everything.

Whether he will release new music addressing the controversy or take a different approach remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that his name will continue to spark conversations, and his journey from being accused to exonerated will remain a significant chapter in the history of Nigerian entertainment.
