Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at 72. The artist reportedly collapsed following a performance at Stella Okoli’s birthday party on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
She was taken to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, but unfortunately, she did not survive.
Eyewitnesses at the event described the tragic moment, noting that Onwenu had just finished an energetic and admirable performance before collapsing at her seat.
Her sudden death left many in shock, as she was well-known for her dynamic stage presence.
Onwenu, born on January 31, 1952, in Imo State, Nigeria, began her career as a singer and quickly became prominent for her distinctive voice and socially conscious lyrics.
Dubbed the “Elegant Stallion,” she was also a talented actress, appearing in numerous Nollywood films. Besides her entertainment career, Onwenu was a journalist and politician, serving as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.
Her advocacy for women’s rights and social justice further cemented her legacy as an iconic figure in Nigeria and beyond.
Onwenu’s contributions to the music and film industries, along with her commitment to social causes, made her a beloved and respected figure in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
