Olalade Ayelabola, a 500-level Computer Science student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has made headlines by setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance walked by a model. She completed an impressive 130.62 kilometers in a catwalk, surpassing her original goal of 120 kilometers.
Ayelabola began her attempt on Nigeria’s Independence Day, October 1, 2024, at the indoor sports center of UNILAG, marking a significant achievement for both her and the institution. This accomplishment sets a new standard for the longest distance covered in a fashion catwalk.
After reaching her initial target, Ayelabola continued walking an additional 10 kilometers, bringing her total to 2,058 laps within the sports center. Despite the physical challenges, she pushed through the pain and difficulties to complete the feat.
In an emotional Instagram post, she expressed gratitude to her supporters, including UNILAG, her fellow models, and her team, for helping her reach this milestone. Her determination and perseverance throughout the journey were evident as she proudly announced her success.
She wrote: “Thank you for helping me do this. Thank you @unilagnigeria @esdcunilag. Thank you my beautiful models. Thank you to everyone on my team. I am grateful for it all. Thank you Nigeria.”
During the record-breaking walk, Ayelabola used the opportunity to promote Nigerian fashion by showcasing clothing from local designers. These designs were provided by the Theatre Arts Department of the university, adding a creative and cultural element to her attempt.
The walk not only highlighted her modeling skills but also put a spotlight on the talent of Nigerian fashion designers, combining the worlds of fashion and endurance in a unique way.
Although Ayelabola has completed the walk and celebrated her achievement, the Guinness World Record is yet to officially recognize and confirm her feat.
Nonetheless, her effort has garnered significant attention and praise, solidifying her as a symbol of perseverance and national pride.
Once officially verified, her accomplishment will stand as an inspiration to many, showing that with hard work and determination, great things can be achieved.
