The Nigerian movie industry has been thrown into mourning following the passing of renowned Nollywood actress, Nkechi Nweje.
The 60-year-old actress, widely recognized for her role in “Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha,” succumbed to complications arising from a major surgery she underwent in November 2024.
Her death, confirmed on Saturday by Nollywood producer Stanley Ajemba, also known as Stanley Ontop, has left colleagues and fans in shock. The news of her passing spread quickly, sending waves of grief throughout the entertainment industry.
Nweje, a vibrant actress known for her powerful performances, was a devoted mother and wife. Her contribution to Nollywood was significant, making her a household name in Nigerian cinema.
Stanley Ontop, visibly shaken by the news, took to his Instagram page to express his sorrow, struggling to come to terms with the reality of her passing.
In a heartfelt tribute, he wrote, “Nollywood is in tears as we lost one of our vibrant Nollywood actresses, @nkechi.nweje, after a brief illness. I couldn’t post since morning because it was like a dream to me.”

He also reminisced about their last conversation, particularly during the “Queenth saga,” when she had advised him to exercise caution. “The last time we spoke, she said, ‘Ontop, stop.’ I am still speechless,” he added, his words laden with emotion.
Following his initial post, Stanley Ajemba shared another message detailing Nweje’s background and career. He revealed that she hailed from Onicha Ado in Onitsha, Anambra State, and was a well-educated woman who had made a name for herself in the industry.
He wrote, “Nkechi Winnie Angel Nweje. From Onicha Ado in Onitsha, Anambra State. A devoted Christian and mother of six, born on 6th June 1964. Married to Dr. Azubuike Nweje. The movie that made her popular was ‘Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha.'”
He further explained that she had come from a rich cultural background and was a graduate, emphasizing that she was not just an actress but also an intellectual force. Her sudden demise, especially after she had shown signs of recovery post-surgery, has left her family, friends, and fans heartbroken.
“She was healing perfectly well until yesterday when she couldn’t bear the pain anymore and gave up the ghost,” Stanley added, his grief palpable.
