The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) reported that Nigerian cinemas generated ₦4.6 billion in the first half of 2024, with 1,199,661 visitors.
Ope Ajayi, CEAN Chairman, highlighted a notable increase from the ₦3 billion revenue generated in the same period in 2023.
Ajayi expressed satisfaction with the revenue parity between Nollywood and Hollywood films, noting that Nollywood films earned ₦2.33 billion, while Hollywood films brought in ₦2.32 billion.
Despite admissions remaining flat, overall box office revenue grew by 34% compared to the previous year. Ajayi anticipates Nollywood’s continued growth, projecting that it will surpass Hollywood in box office contributions by 2025, with an expected 40% growth from the previous year.
Upcoming Hollywood films in August include “Alien Romulus,” “It Ends with Us,” “Trap,” “Blink Twice,” “Afraid,” “The Crow,” and “Borderlands.” Nollywood’s August releases feature “Betrayed,” “Move Like a Boss,” “The Weekend,” and “Force Empire.”
