Nigerian influencer Papaya Ex has finally opened up about the controversy surrounding her outfit at the traditional wedding of Priscilla Ojo and Tanzanian singer, Juma Jux.
Papaya’s outfit, which featured striking images of the couple, drew widespread backlash on social media for one specific detail: Juma Jux’s picture was placed directly over her chest—specifically, her left breast—while Priscilla’s image was positioned on her right hip.
The placement of Juma’s photo sparked accusations of insensitivity and disrespect, prompting a flood of criticism from online users and even a playful confrontation from the bride herself during the ceremony.
At the wedding, a light-hearted but telling moment unfolded on the dance floor when Priscilla approached Papaya and asked, “Why did you put my husband on your chest?” The question, though delivered in jest, carried undertones of genuine concern and discomfort.
Papaya quickly apologized in the moment, offering a warm response: “I’m sorry, my love, you know I love you.”
Despite her apology, the social media backlash continued to swell, with many Nigerians accusing her of being provocative and disrespectful at a joyous occasion meant to celebrate love and unity.
In an attempt to clear the air, Papaya Ex addressed the controversy during an interview with popular content creator Kuye Adegoke, also known as Egungun.
Responding to Egungun’s question about the criticism she received, Papaya did not hold back. “I feel like Nigerians are too somehow, like they sexualize everything,” she said. “If I’d put the picture here, they’ll still complain that it’s close to like my coochie, you understand.”
According to her, the reaction was less about the actual placement and more about the public’s tendency to misinterpret and over-sexualize harmless gestures.
Papaya further explained that once the picture placement was pointed out to her as potentially inappropriate, she took immediate steps to make things right. She made it a point to speak directly with Priscilla and apologize.
“When they told me ‘oh Papaya, it’s supposed to be here,’ I felt very sorry,” she said. “I even had to tell the wife, like, you know I love you, I will not do something you know… and she was like ‘okay yeah, I understand, it’s okay.’”
Her remarks conveyed that there was no ill intention behind the placement, and the bride appeared to accept her explanation.
With the dress drama addressed, Egungun shifted gears and asked Papaya about the cost of the now-famous outfit.
In a casual but jaw-dropping response, she revealed that the ensemble came with a hefty price tag. “Like N4.5 million,” she stated.
The revelation drew stunned reactions online, adding another layer of intrigue to the incident. Despite the criticism, Papaya’s confidence in her fashion choices—and spending power—remains unshaken.
Finally, Egungun brought up another detail of interest to her fans: her relocation to Dubai.
When asked about her rent in the upscale city, Papaya coyly declined to give personal details but offered a glimpse into the lifestyle she now leads. “Let’s not talk about me,” she said.
“But if you wanna stay where I stay—’cause I stay in Downtown—it’s about N12 million every month.”
With that, she reinforced her image as a bold, unapologetic influencer, living large and unbothered, regardless of public opinion.
