The tragic passing of Hollyoaks actor and reality TV star Paul Danan has been attributed to a lethal combination of drugs, an inquest has revealed.
The 46-year-old was found dead in his Bristol home in January, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his untimely demise. The inquest, which was opened and adjourned at Avon Coroner’s Court in Bristol, confirmed that Danan had ingested a cocktail of substances, including heroin and cocaine, leading to fatal toxicity.
Danan was best known for his role as Sol Patrick in the popular Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks, where he portrayed the rebellious character from 1997 to 2001. His television career extended beyond acting, as he later gained further recognition through appearances on celebrity editions of Love Island and Big Brother, where his larger-than-life personality made him a fan favorite.
Despite his success, Danan openly struggled with substance abuse for many years, a battle that ultimately contributed to his passing.
The inquest heard that emergency services pronounced Danan dead at his home on 15 January, with his partner, Melissa Crooks, identifying his body at the scene. According to coroner’s officer Alexis Camp, the provisional cause of death was determined to be the combined toxicity of multiple substances, including heroin, methadone, codeine, pregabalin, cocaine, and zopiclone.
The presence of benzodiazepines was also noted as a contributing factor. While no suicide note was found, the case is still under review, with further statements expected from his GP, family members, police, and emergency responders.
Investigations are also ongoing with the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, as officials seek to establish a clearer picture of Danan’s mental health history and any support he may have been receiving before his death.
The full inquest hearing has been scheduled for 28 May, where additional evidence will be presented regarding the events leading up to his passing. While his family has not expressed concerns regarding the findings, the inquest aims to provide a comprehensive account of the circumstances that led to the actor’s tragic demise.
Danan’s struggles with addiction were well-documented, and he had been open about his battle with substance abuse, which he revealed began during his teenage years. In October last year, he was accused of driving under the influence of drugs, an incident that added to his legal troubles.
Additionally, he had been charged with possession of cocaine and cannabis and was due to appear for a plea hearing on 16 January, just one day after he was found dead. His legal issues further underscored the challenges he faced in maintaining his recovery.
In 2019, Danan spoke candidly about his journey to sobriety on The Jeremy Kyle Show, where he admitted that staying clean was a daily struggle. “I have to work hard at it every day to keep in recovery,” he said at the time. His honesty about addiction resonated with many, as he used his platform to raise awareness about the difficulties of overcoming substance dependence.
However, despite his efforts, Danan faced repeated setbacks in his personal battle, which tragically ended in his passing.
Following the news of his death, tributes poured in from colleagues and friends, many of whom remembered Danan as a warm and charismatic individual. Fellow Love Island star Calum Best was among those who paid their respects, sharing a heartfelt message on Instagram.
“Life wasn’t always easy for him, but he faced it with such heart and courage, and that inspired so many of us,” Best wrote. “We shared many laughs, chats, and unforgettable moments. My heart goes out to his loved ones right now. Rest easy, brother.”
