The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has denied having any knowledge of claims made by social media commentator Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), regarding the alleged theft of ₦180 million from his Non-Governmental Organization’s (NGO) bank account.
According to VDM, the funds were stolen after the NGO’s account was hacked through its website. However, the police insist they have no record of such a case being reported to them.
VDM had earlier caused a stir online on Friday when he posted a video on Instagram announcing the alleged theft. In the video, he stated that ₦180 million was missing from the NGO’s account, leaving only ₦20 million.
He further claimed that the hackers responsible for the theft had been tracked, and one suspect had already been apprehended. In his words:
“I’ve not been myself these past few days. Somebody hacked into the NGO website, and ₦180 million is missing. Thankfully, we’ve tracked the person, and one suspect has been arrested.”
VDM provided additional details, explaining that the bank account had been placed on Post No Debit (PND) status to prevent further unauthorized transactions.
While ₦20 million remained in the account, he alleged that ₦160 million had been diverted by the hackers.
He also disclosed that efforts were underway to recover the stolen funds, including a planned trip to Jos to address the matter.
The social media commentator also noted that the incident had been reported to the police, who he claimed were assisting with the investigation.
However, when contacted on Saturday, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, stated that the command was unaware of the case.
She categorically denied any involvement, saying, “The FCT Police Command is not aware of any case involving VDM’s missing funds and is not conducting any investigation into it.”
Adeh also suggested that VDM should clarify where the matter was reported, as the police have no record of the case in Abuja.
This statement from the police has further fueled doubts about the authenticity of VDM’s claims. While some individuals on social media expressed sympathy for VDM, others questioned the credibility of his story, calling for more transparency.
The police’s denial has added another layer of controversy to the situation, leaving many people wondering about the true circumstances surrounding the alleged theft.
As it stands, questions remain unanswered regarding where the case was reported and the progress of efforts to recover the funds.
The situation continues to generate significant attention and debate across social media platforms.
