Afrobeats star Rema was honored with a royal plaque by the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, during a visit to the Oba’s palace ahead of his homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium in Benin City.
This recognition from the Oba underscores Rema’s role as an ambassador for Edo State and his efforts in promoting the ancient Benin empire through his music.
Prior to the palace visit, Rema joined Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Edo Arena, which will be named “Rema Dome” in his honor.
Rema, who was born Divine Ikubor in Benin City, continues to pay homage to his roots, most recently through his hit song “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, where he expressed his pride in the city and suggested he deserved a medal for his contributions to promoting the kingdom.
