Robert Downey Jr. has announced his return to the Marvel film franchise, this time as the villain Doctor Doom. The 59-year-old actor surprised fans at Comic-Con in San Diego when he was dramatically unmasked during a Marvel panel.
Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, Downey Jr. stated, “New mask, same task,” highlighting his new role within the Marvel universe.
Downey Jr. is widely known for his portrayal of Iron Man, first appearing as the character in 2008 and reprising the role in eight more Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films.
His upcoming return will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who confirmed they would helm his next MCU appearance in “Avengers: Doomsday.”
Reflecting on their journey, Anthony Russo mentioned that while they once thought “Avengers: Endgame” was their final Marvel project, a compelling story has reignited their interest in continuing with the MCU.
Recently, Downey Jr. experienced significant success at the Oscars, winning best supporting actor for his role alongside Cillian Murphy in “Oppenheimer.”
