Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have expanded their business interests in North Wales by becoming co-owners of Wrexham Lager Beer Company Ltd, alongside the Roberts family.
The duo, both Hollywood actors, previously gained attention as the owners of the Wrexham AFC football club. Now, with their recent investment in Wrexham Lager, they continue to deepen their ties to the community and support local businesses, marking a new chapter for the historic beer company.
Wrexham Lager, founded in 1882, is Britain’s oldest lager brewery and holds a unique place in history, having been the only lager served on the Titanic’s infamous maiden voyage.
This storied past contributes to the brand’s reputation and appeal, making it an exciting acquisition for Reynolds and McElhenney, who are keen to bring international attention and growth to the company. They aim to leverage the brand’s heritage while helping it expand beyond its local roots.
This acquisition is not the first time Reynolds and McElhenney have shown interest in North Wales; they purchased Wrexham AFC in 2020. Their stewardship of the football club has led to impressive successes, including the club’s rise to the third division of English football, celebrated in the popular Disney+ documentary Welcome to Wrexham.
Their influence has reinvigorated the club and brought a newfound sense of pride to the Wrexham community, which they hope to replicate with Wrexham Lager.
Wrexham itself, located in northeast Wales, was elevated to city status during Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee in 2022, underscoring the region’s growing prominence.
Reynolds and McElhenney’s interest in local investments has further drawn attention to the area. Recently, the two were also in discussions to invest in Cardiff-based cricket team Welsh Fire, showing a pattern of involvement in Welsh sports and business ventures aimed at community development.
The latest investment in Wrexham Lager was made through Red Dragon Ventures, a company created by the duo to support Wrexham’s community and drive growth for Wrexham AFC.
This venture reflects their commitment to long-term investments in the region, aiming to boost both the local economy and the international reputation of Welsh enterprises.
The RR McReynolds Company, Reynolds and McElhenney’s joint business entity, partnered with the Allyn family of New York to facilitate this deal, emphasizing a collaborative approach to business expansion.
According to Wrexham Lager, the investment will enable the brand to enhance its infrastructure and broaden its reach internationally. Plans include expanding production, distribution, and marketing efforts to scale up the company’s operations.
Reynolds and McElhenney expressed excitement about the future of Wrexham Lager, noting the brewery’s heritage and seeing themselves as part of its next chapter.
Their experience managing Wrexham AFC has prepared them to foster growth for Wrexham Lager, blending business acumen with their personal passion for the community.
James Wright, CEO of Wrexham Lager Beer Company Ltd, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, acknowledging that having Reynolds and McElhenney onboard is significant for the brand’s expansion.
Meanwhile, the Roberts family, who have managed the brewery since 2011, will continue to play an active role, ensuring the brand maintains its heritage even as it aims for global reach.
This partnership promises a promising future for Wrexham Lager, with Reynolds and McElhenney eager to build on its legacy.
