Seun Kuti and Damian Marley have been active recently, kicking off their North American tour on June 8, which will continue until July 28. Amidst this tour, they released a new single titled “Dey,” now available on all streaming platforms.

The track features the signature Afrobeat sound of Fela Kuti, carried on by his son, Seun, since 1997. Adding to the excitement, “Dey” includes a collaboration with Damian Marley, blending their iconic musical legacies.

In “Dey,” Seun Kuti critiques a world obsessed with money and superficiality, advocating for simplicity and authenticity. Damian Marley’s quick-fire flow enhances the track, creating a dynamic blend.

Seun expressed his honor in collaborating with Marley, in a press statement highlighting the historical significance of the union of the Kuti and Marley dynasties, both rooted in African musical heritage and social struggles.

In his words:

“I’m very honored to have Damian on this track, it’s a historical moment. This is the first time that Kutis and Marleys have collaborated and recorded together. We are two performers, both from the dynasty of Africa, with a huge continental divide, singing about similar struggles… I think this collaboration is an affirmation of the righteousness of the message of our dynasties.”

The single “Dey” emphasizes African unity and the intrinsic value of every African person, regardless of their status. Seun Kuti rejects the notion that Africans must constantly prove their worth, advocating instead for embracing their inherent specialness.

“Dey” is the lead single from Seun Kuti and Egypt 80’s upcoming album “Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head),” set to release on October 4.
