Richard M. Sherman, one half of the renowned sibling duo behind the iconic soundtracks of Disney classics, has passed away at the age of 95 due to an age-related illness.
Alongside his brother Robert, Richard composed over 150 songs for Disney, earning acclaim and accolades for their contributions to beloved films like “Mary Poppins,” for which they received two Academy Awards, including Best Song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee.”
Their partnership extended beyond Disney, encompassing Broadway hits like “Over Here!” and chart-topping songs such as “Tall Paul” and “You’re Sixteen.” However, it was their collaboration with Disney that solidified their status as musical legends, with their songs becoming synonymous with the magic of Disney storytelling.

In addition to “Mary Poppins,” the Sherman brothers’ repertoire includes the soundtracks of other Disney classics like “The Jungle Book,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” and “The Sword And The Stone.” Their timeless melodies, including the ubiquitous “It’s A Small World,” continue to enchant audiences worldwide and are celebrated as quintessential examples of Disney’s lyrical excellence.

Beyond their musical achievements, the Shermans garnered numerous awards and honors, including induction into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame and receiving the National Medal of Arts from President George W. Bush.
