For the past 11 years, the Simon Sabela Awards have celebrated the achievements of the KwaZulu-Natal film industry. This year, screen veterans Melusi Yeni and Thembinkosi Mthembu won their first awards at the event.

In an emotional speech, Yeni reminisced about starting his career 25 years ago and dedicated his win to other aspiring actors. He emphasized the motivational impact of awards like the Simon Sabela statuette, highlighting the recognition and appreciation they symbolize.

Yeni’s winning role as Sokhobase in the telenovela “Sibongile and the Dlaminis” was particularly significant for him, reflecting his career aspirations.

Mthembu, who won Best Actor in a TV series for “Shaka ILembe,” was equally surprised and grateful for his award. Known for his breakout role in Mzansi Magic’s “The Republic” in 2019, Mthembu has previously won social awards but this is his first acting accolade.

He spoke about the importance of collaboration in the industry, stressing that actors rely on their co-actors, extras, cameramen, and directors. Mthembu expressed gratitude for his fans’ support and encouraged mutual respect among colleagues in the industry.
