Controversial Nigerian musician Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has regained his freedom after spending nearly two months in Kuje Prison.
This development comes shortly after a federal high court in Abuja granted him bail of twenty million naira (₦20,000,000) last Wednesday. The artist, widely recognized for his outspoken personality and eccentric music style, has been the subject of significant media attention throughout his legal ordeal.
Darlington’s lawyer, Stan Alieke, confirmed his release through an Instagram post, where he shared celebratory photos with the singer. In his caption, Alieke expressed his determination to seek justice for his client. “Delighted to announce that our client, Mr. Darlington Achakpo, aka Speed Darlington (Akpi), has regained his freedom after two months of illegal incarceration,” Alieke wrote.
He further emphasized that the legal team would explore all avenues to address what they consider a violation of Darlington’s fundamental human rights. “We will be exploring every angle of the law to ensure justice is served for the unfair and unjust treatment he endured at the hands of the Nigerian Police Force,” he added.
Darlington’s legal team expressed gratitude to those who supported their efforts. “Special thanks to my colleagues, Mr. Marshal Abubakar Esq, Barr. Deji Adeyanju, Barr. Hamza Nuh, and Barr. David,” Alieke noted.
The lawyer described the singer’s ordeal as a testament to the resilience required to achieve justice. “Freedom cometh by struggle,” he concluded, signaling their intent to pursue redress for Darlington’s alleged illegal detention.
The controversy surrounding Speed Darlington began in October 2024 when he was arrested following a petition filed by Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy. The petition was reportedly based on Darlington’s comments about Burna Boy’s alleged association with hip-hop mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.
After his initial release, Darlington was re-arrested on November 27, 2024, while performing at a show in Owerri, Imo State. This time, the charges included cyberstalking Burna Boy, leading to his prolonged detention in Kuje Prison.
While Darlington’s release marks a significant milestone in his ongoing legal battle, the case is far from over. The musician is expected to return to court on March 18, 2025, for trial on charges related to cybercrime.
Despite the challenges, Darlington’s release has been met with relief and celebration among his supporters, who hope for a favorable outcome in the months ahead. For now, Speed Darlington remains a free man, resolute in his fight for justice.
