Nigerian Afrobeat sensation, Spyro, has opened up about a difficult chapter in his music career, revealing how a major collaboration that he believed would catapult him to stardom ended up leaving him disillusioned and struggling.

In a recent interview with HipTV, Spyro spoke candidly about his 2018 remix of the song Funke, which featured music heavyweights Davido and Mayorkun. At the time, the collaboration seemed like a breakthrough moment, one that should have solidified his place in the industry.

But instead of launching his career to greater heights, the experience led to unexpected setbacks that nearly derailed his progress.

“I had a song back then that had Davido and Mayorkun on it,” Spyro recalled, visibly emotional. “I actually thought that my life was about to change.”

According to him, the remix gained traction and was well received, but things took a turn shortly after its release. “The song came out big,” he continued, “and I went back down all of a sudden.”

For Spyro, the situation was not only confusing but deeply painful. He had been rubbing shoulders with A-list artists, only to find himself shut out shortly after. “I sat down and thought about it,” he said. “How do I go from working with Davido, vibing with Mayorkun and all those guys, and all of a sudden, they no longer even pick your calls anymore?”

The emotional toll of the experience weighed heavily on him. Spyro admitted that the sudden change left him feeling abandoned and overwhelmed. “I would just sit down on my staircase back then and cry,” he confessed.

“But I had my parents at home that I needed to take care of, and a lot of things were just going wrong.” With no calls returned and mounting responsibilities, the once-promising moment became a source of pain and reflection.

For many rising artists, such collaborations are seen as golden opportunities, but for Spyro, it became a sobering lesson about the unpredictability of the music industry.

Despite the setback, Spyro’s resilience eventually paid off. He regained his footing in 2022 with the massive success of his hit single Who Is Your Guy, which became a street anthem and won him new fans across the continent.

Since then, he has gone on to collaborate with major female artists like Tiwa Savage and Simi, signaling a fresh start and renewed relevance.

Though the experience with Davido and Mayorkun was disappointing, Spyro’s story serves as a powerful reminder that the road to success is rarely a straight path—and sometimes, a setback is just preparation for something greater.
