Nollywood rising star Chimezie Imo is set to make a splash in the film industry with his debut production, “Strawberry Chinny,” which will premiere at the Essence Film Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana, in July 2024. This marks a significant milestone for Imo, who takes on the role of both producer and actor in the film.
The Essence Film Festival is renowned for showcasing original works that celebrate Black culture and stories from across the globe, including Africa, through various mediums such as films, episodic projects, and new media.
“Strawberry Chinny” joins the lineup of culturally rich narratives selected for the festival’s Cultural Connections section, highlighting the diverse talent and voices within the Black community.
The film follows the journey of Chinny, a Nigerian makeup artist portrayed by Genoveva Umeh, who finds herself in a complex living arrangement with her childhood best friend Ifeanyi, played by Imo, after a heartbreaking breakup.
Directed by Cheta Chukwu and produced by Kele, Ngozi Okafor, and Imo himself, “Strawberry Chinny” promises to captivate audiences with its blend of romance, humor, and relatable storytelling. The ensemble cast, which includes Obehi Aburime and Modola Osifuwa, brings the characters to life, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative.
