Popular TikToker Peller has found himself at the center of a heated controversy after dismissing Nigerian Afrobeats star Runtown as an “up-and-coming artist.”

During a recent livestream, his co-streamer suggested that he feature Runtown in his content, but Peller immediately rejected the idea, insisting that he only wanted to collaborate with well-established artists. His remarks, which downplayed Runtown’s legacy in the Afrobeats industry, quickly went viral, drawing intense criticism from music lovers and industry insiders alike.

In the viral clip, Peller openly dismissed Runtown’s relevance, questioning his success and recognition in the music industry. “Wetin be Runtown? That one never blow. We no know am. Give me another person. Who is that? Runtown? Don’t bring upcoming artists on my live video. Na artistes wey don blow well well I want,” he ranted.

His statement shocked many fans, who were quick to highlight Runtown’s immense contributions to Afrobeats. Critics accused Peller of being uninformed about the industry’s history, pointing out that Runtown had significantly shaped the sound of contemporary Afrobeats.

The backlash was swift and unrelenting, with social media users berating Peller for speaking condescendingly about an artist widely regarded as a pioneer of modern Afrobeats. Many pointed out that Runtown’s influence extends far beyond his initial rise to fame, citing his groundbreaking hits and international appeal.

Some also accused Peller of chasing clout by disrespecting a respected artist to gain attention for his livestream. His past collaborations with established artists such as Olamide, Tiwa Savage, and Davido only fueled the outrage, as critics questioned why he would dismiss an artist of Runtown’s caliber.

Runtown first gained widespread recognition in 2014 with his hit single Gallardo, featuring Davido, which set the stage for his career’s success. However, it was his 2016 smash hit Mad Over You that propelled him to international stardom, earning him acclaim as one of the most innovative voices in Afrobeats.

His music, known for its distinct melodies and fusion of African and Caribbean sounds, has influenced many artists in the industry. As the controversy continues to unfold, many fans are rallying behind Runtown, reaffirming his status as a trailblazer in the Nigerian music scene.
