Nigerian singer and Grammy-winning vocalist Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, recently opened up about her love for her body and the factors that shape her unique fashion style.
During an intimate conversation with Cocoa Butter in Atlanta, Georgia, Tems was asked what she cherished most about being a Black woman.
With a confident smile, she didn’t hesitate to celebrate her natural curves. “I love being curvy. I love that I have a little booty, you know what I’m saying?” she said, radiating pride in her figure.
Tems went on to explain that her figure is not just a physical attribute but a source of pride and empowerment for her.
“Being a Black woman is a blessing, and I think my body is part of that blessing. I love my ‘figure 8’ shape, and I’m proud of it,” she stated, emphasizing that her confidence comes from embracing who she is.
For the 29-year-old star, self-love is an essential part of her identity, and she encourages other women to embrace their natural beauty.
The conversation soon shifted to her bold and distinctive fashion sense, which has made her a standout on red carpets around the world.
When asked what drives her style choices, the Oscar-nominated singer revealed that her Nigerian heritage plays a significant role.
“I’m definitely into details. I’m definitely into the bling,” she shared. “I think Nigerians are very extravagant in everything, and I’m very into that. But I always put my own spin, and I’m not afraid to be who I am.”
Tems’ love for fashion is not just about the clothes she wears but about expressing her personality and celebrating her roots.
She explained that growing up in Lagos exposed her to a culture of bold colors, luxurious fabrics, and daring styles, which continue to inspire her today.
Her fashion choices reflect a blend of tradition and modernity, making her a true style icon.
Beyond fashion, Tems is also passionate about changing global perceptions of Africa.
Earlier this month, during an interview at the 2025 Met Gala in New York, she encouraged people worldwide to experience Africa firsthand.
“I always encourage people to go to Lagos and Ghana for vacation. Just go and see for yourself before you make an opinion [about Africa]. See it for yourself and see how you feel,” she advised.
For her, Africa is a vibrant, diverse, and dynamic continent that must be experienced to be understood.
Reflecting on her roots, Tems shared a bit about her background. Born on June 11, 1995, in Lagos, Nigeria, her full name, Temilade, means “the crown is mine” in the Yoruba language.
Her early childhood was spent in the United Kingdom, where her family relocated shortly after her birth. However, following her parents’ separation, she returned to Nigeria at the age of five.
Growing up in Lagos played a significant role in shaping her personality, music, and sense of style.
Today, Tems is celebrated not only for her powerful voice but also for her unapologetic self-expression. Whether she is dazzling in a stunning outfit on a global stage or speaking proudly about her heritage, she remains a beacon of confidence and inspiration.
As her music continues to reach millions, her message of self-love, pride, and cultural appreciation resonates with fans worldwide.
